Begin Construction

I used a 2" aluminum pipe that I cut into 3.5" lengths for the hubs. Metal strapping will go through the center of the pipe and 2 wood screws will hold it together on both sides of the 2x4 beams.

Dome construction started in the garage until it got too large. Then we moved the operation to the back yard.

The base was set on concrete blocks at each corner then the two half dome sections were placed on top.

  1. A friend at work wants to build a dome much like your done as a greenhouse. It will be 20' in diameter built on a knee wall which. I haven't determined the height as of yet. The large equilateral triangle that will rest on the top of the knee wall I am thinking 30" as to give a bit of height to a doorway. I was wondering how you did your door if I may ask? I went to your blog but it's been near four years since your last post and I hope you are doing okay. Your Dome looks really good. I've built a few small ones over the years but this one will be used by folks who are vegetarian. I had read an article how some are getting a 10 month growing season out of their greenhouses. I've always been a fan of the geodesic dome and see it has become more popular because of the internet. Your done looks great. We will probably use some type of batten's to hold down the plastic cover. Some are simply stapling and then using poly tape on the seams. Not sure how well take holds up. Hope you are well. A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you. ☺
